September Album Feature: Global Tranquility by Putumayo
Ten artists. Ten musical perspectives. One gentle invitation to slow down.
There is a particular luxury in music that does not ask you to hurry.
For September, Music Press Asia turns down the volume of the outside world with Global Tranquility, the latest collection from Putumayo, bringing together calming and meditative music from across the globe. From Indian yoga melodies and Gaelic ballads to Nordic lullabies, Sikh kirtans, African blues and Brazilian bossa nova, the album travels widely while keeping its destination remarkably simple: peace.
The collection features Ben Aylon with Roei Hermon from Israel and Senegal, Canadian artists Saimavik with Juurini, Riit and Simon Walls, Indian musician Manish Vyas, Scottish folk group Hò-rò, The TWO from Mauritius and Switzerland, Norwegian singer-songwriter Kristin Asbjørnsen, American artist Jai-Jagdeesh, Guinean guitarist Moh! Kouyaté, Israeli musician Sheffy Oren Bach, and Brazilian singer-songwriter Luísa Maita.
The beauty of Global Tranquility lies in its variety without urgency. Saimavik’s Inuktitut-language music, for instance, centres on calm and resilience, while Asbjørnsen’s Øyeblikket explores a moment of stillness amid difficulty. Moh! Kouyaté brings an acoustic African blues sensibility, while Hò-rò draws from Scottish Gaelic tradition.
This is music for the spaces between things: morning coffee, an evening walk, reading, meditation, yoga, sleep, or simply the increasingly radical act of doing nothing for a few minutes.
In a world that seems determined to send another notification before you have finished the previous one, Global Tranquility offers something beautifully uncomplicated: time to breathe.
