This month we continue with our efforts of raising awareness of the environment contributing our “NATURE” segment to a 2009 documentary film made by National Geographic in cooperation with FINAS (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia).

Among the Great Apes with Michelle Yeoh is a poignant film that shows how Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (also known as Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary) in Sabah is fighting for the survival and well-being of each ape.

In the documentary, Michelle Yeoh visits her adopted orangutan in her home country Malaysia and studies for three weeks what is done to sustain the long-term population of this endangered species. Guided by Dr Cecilia Boklin, Yeoh takes part in all activities; she is filmed nurturing an orphaned suckling orangutan.

Sepilok is world-renowned for its work in rehabilitating orphans back into the wild after rescuing them from logging sites, plantations, and illegal hunting.

The film won “Best Natural History or Wildlife Programme or Docu-drama” at Asian Television Awards 2010 and “Best Environmental or Tourism Documentary at Malaysian Documentary Awards 2010. In 2011, it was broadcast internationally and presented at the Eco-Knights Film Festival.

Directed by Malaysia’s prominent documentary filmmaker Harun Rahman and Lara Ariffin, the documentary is put to music by Farul Farid, written by Kathryn Pasternak and produced by production company Nuvista Media (previously known as Novista Sdn Bhd).
