18th Changchun Film Festival Commences
The 18th China Changchun Film Festival (CCFF) kicked off on the evening of August 28 with a lot of Chinese filmmakers and stars attending the opening ceremony.
Ten awards, including for best film, director, actor and actress, and best screenplay, will be presented during the festival.
The judging panel is led by renowned Chinese filmmaker Huang Jianxin and includes director Zheng Dasheng, cinematographer Zhao Fei, actress Yu Nan, actor Zhu Yawen, scriptwriter Guo Junli and musician Shu Nan.
Composer Shu Nan, who served as a judge for the third time at the Festival, said, “In the past decade or so, I have witnessed the tremendous changes in Chinese cinema, as well as in Changchun and CCFF. I am looking forward to coming back to Changchun to experience the charm of the CCFF.”
A total of 15 films have been entered into the final competition for the Golden Deer, the award for best film, including the science fiction blockbuster “The Wandering Earth II” and historical comedy thriller “Full River Red.”
The international film show, as part of the 18th Changchun Film Festival China 2023, consists of classic and contemporary sections, with four Russian films featured in each segment.

“The Cranes Are Flying” directed by Mikhail Kalatozov and “The Ballad of a Soldier” directed by Grigoriy Chukhray are among the movies screened in the classic segment, while “The Whaler Boy” and “The Age of Pioneers” are included in the contemporary segment, according to the organizing committee of the film festival.
Films shortlisted this year include the comedies Full River Red, One and Only, and Table for Six, sci-fi fantasy films Wandering Earth II, Creation of Gods I, and Cha A Er Zhong, war-themed films Home Coming, Hidden Blade, and Born to Fly, suspense and crime films Lost in the Stars, The Procurator, and No More Bets, and inspirational films Ping Pong: The Triumph, Never Say Never, and In the Search of Lost Time.
This year’s festival has set up a total of six units of the main activities, including opening and closing ceremonies, film awards, film screenings, film forums, tribute to the “cradle”, and market integration.
During the same period, a series of activities such as the 6th China Film New Power Forum, film and television industry seminar, theme forum of “Discussing Films and Seeking the Essence”, tribute to the cradle – “Night of Changchun Film Festival” Gala, and the launching ceremony of “Guangming Cinema” will be held.
The 18th CCFF will run until September 2.
