There is something rather satisfying about coming home after conquering a stage on the other side of the world.
For Singaporean songstress Nathania Ong, that journey has taken her from Singapore to London’s West End and now back to the Esplanade Concert Hall, where she will front the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for On My Own: Nathania Ong with the Singapore Symphony on 17 and 18 December 2026.
Accompanied by the SSO and conducted by Joshua Tan, Ong will bring her West End experience home for a programme that moves comfortably between Broadway, musical theatre and Disney. The repertoire includes Les Misérables, Wicked, Frozen, The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Sweeney Todd and Candide.
She will also be joined by fellow Singaporean vocalists Preston Lim and Vanessa Kee, turning the concert into something more than a showcase of one performer. It becomes a meeting point between Singapore’s home-grown musical-theatre talent, a full symphony orchestra and some of the most recognisable songs written for the stage and screen.
For audiences who have followed Ong’s journey from Singapore to London’s West End, the return carries its own significance. The songs may be familiar, but hearing them sung by a Singaporean artist who has built her career on one of the world’s most demanding musical-theatre stages gives the evening a distinctly local story.
The evening also reaches into the canon of musical theatre’s great composers, whose works have shaped how generations experience the stage. From the sophisticated musical language of Leonard Bernstein, to the intricate, often psychologically charged worlds of Stephen Sondheim, and the unmistakable melodic storytelling of Alan Menken, the programme places familiar favourites within a much broader theatrical tradition. It is a reminder that behind every soaring ballad and memorable chorus lies a rich lineage of composers who turned orchestral colour, character and storytelling into the language of musical theatre.
And perhaps that is the most compelling part: the West End comes home, but this time, Singapore gets to hear its own songstress tell the story.
