A Portrait of Laneway Festival Singapore 2017

St Jerome Laneway featured international and regional artists including KOHH, Nick Murphy aka Chet Faker, Bottlesmoker, Wednesday Campanella, Star & Rabbit.

Chet Faker appeared at Laneway Festival Singapore yesterday under his real name Nick Murphy officially performing at one of the most popular and influential lifestyle music festival in Singapore. Despite the relentless downpour that plague the festival grounds, the audience at the main festival ground at the Meadow situated within the surrounding area of Gardens By The Way went into a frenzy as the artist came onstage signifying the last lineup of the evening and the beginning of St. Jerome Laneway series’ of festivals – one of the seven festivals that is organised outside of Australia and New Zealand within the next 3 weeks.

Some of our highlights below are just a fraction of what we’ve truly enjoyed. Laneway continues to celebrate talented upcoming artists worldwide while continuing its effort to remain as a lifestyle festival attracting not only music lovers but also those who wish to check out the latest fashion and crowd pulling deals from corporate and entertainment brands.

DBS appeared on the festival grounds promoting its platinum credit card ‘Live Fresh!’ and also giving away a 2-night stay at the Laneway’s ‘Glamping hotel’ and tickets to Laneway Melbourne. H&M continues to be a major partner with Laneway providing early ticket collection at some of their major stores on the island as well as discounts to their festivals collection. Other partners include Budweiser, a regular festival sponsor which also saw it being one of the biggest sponsor and partner to China’s biggest EDM festival STORM; and Onitsuka Tiger that took artists off stage on a fashion roundup while they give out appointed interviews at the Media Hangout station.

For the first time in the history of the festival, acts from Japan had made it to Laneway’s list of lineup: Wednesday Campanella and KOHH. KOHH is making an unusual appearance in Japan scene focusing on its collective of hip-hop tunes. His recent release, titled ‘Dirt’, is a combination of rock influences and prominent undertones popped at no. 2 on the indies chart nabbing top spot on iTunes’ hip-hop chart last year.

Wednesday Campanella is no stranger to the festival scene. Her defiant J-rock is an enigmatic mix of house, techno and chill out music touching on subjects like travel, fiction stories and northern Japanese cuisine. She has made her round performing at Summer Sonic 2015, Rising Sun Rock Festival 2015, Arabaki Rock Fest, 15 and SXSW 2016.

Performing since 2013, Wednesday Campanella is an electronic band consisting of 3 members from Tokyo, Japan.

Froya, a Malaysian songbird, has not only began churning out some of the more progressive sounds as a pop singer and songwriter in the local indie scene since 2011 but continues to pioneer a new generation of artists in the region blending electronica with folk.

Bottlesmoker, Indonesia’s hidden talent that basically produced and recorded their music from within their private bedrooms, have finally made it out into stage performance since their very first album release on MySpace in 2006. This band has been signed to labels in the US before being accepted into the local music scene and have only gained a huge following on the ground. They have also performed with Star and Rabbit, another upcoming indie talent from Indonesia, who were also invited to Laneway this year.

Laneway continues to discover some of the region’s most upcoming talents and popular demands identifying recent trends; a worldwind of soaring artists focusing on genres such as electronica and rock that are gradually submerging from the underground scene towards mainstream popularity.
