Sydney, Australia — Opera Australia is set to captivate audiences once again with Madama Butterfly, Puccini’s timeless masterpiece, staged at the Sydney Opera House from 3 January to 25 March 2026. Known for its heartrending score and visually striking staging, this production blends classical operatic storytelling with cutting-edge digital artistry, ensuring it remains a must-see in the global opera calendar.

Venue & Program Details – Madama Butterfly at Sydney Opera House

Performed in the Joan Sutherland Theatre, this Moffatt Oxenbould’s award-winning direction transforms the stage into a dynamic cinematic experience. Ten-by-seven-metre LED screens and robotic elements immerse the audience in a vivid, dreamlike Japan, enhancing the story’s emotional depth.



Extraordinary singers draw every ounce of emotion out of the passionate score, led by conductors Andrea Battistoni, Erina Yashima and Paul Fitzsimon. Four emerging international stars make their Australian debuts. Sopranos Guanqun Yu and Vittoria Yeo have performed all over Europe and America and now share the role of Cio-Cio-San at the Sydney Opera House along with Australian star Olivia Cranwell. La Scala-trained tenor Oreste Cosimo and versatile young American tenor Robert Watson sing the role of Pinkerton.

Soprano Guanqun Yu is a regular guest at international opera houses in Europe and America and has enjoyed great success as a genuine ‘Voce verdiana’. Her engagements in the 2025/26 season include her return to the Metropolitan Opera New York as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, her role debut as Madama Butterfly at Opera Australia in Sydney and Liu in a new production of Turandot (Breth-Guggeis) at Oper Frankfurt.

The role of Cio-Cio-San will be shared by Guanqun Yu, Vittoria Yeo, and Australia soprano Olivia Vranwell. Tenors Robert Watson and Oreste Cosimo are among those singing Pinkerton during the run.
