Linda Lindas Performed LIVE at LA Central Library

NPR Music (Tiny Desk) features the Linda Lindas LIVE at LA Central Library.

Teen punk band Linda Lindas returned to the library to perform for the band’s Tiny Desk [home] concert. Playing at the Los Angeles Central Library this time, the band members put together a 15-minute program and take turns singing. Starting with the song “Growing” sung by guitarist Lucia, the title track to the band’s debut album.

Picture a library. One that looks sheepishly normal but with ceilings at least two-story high. Why? Because it is where Linda Lindas debuted their first LIVE performance. Seriously, they shot to stardom after performing in the Los Angeles Public Library’s Cypress Park branch in 2021.

“We’re playing the library once more,” said guitarist Lucia de la Garza, with a smile. Looking fittingly amazed in the “cool space”, the band performed a powerful set under daytime office lights. A setting that is fast becoming the signature style of the Tiny Desk.

After a few more songs, the band is joined by percussionist Spencer Lere from the band Bleached. Lere, as Mila points out, is also her drum teacher. Following the introduction, guitarist Salazar sang a surfy track in Spanish. The band ends its set with the scorching “Racist, Sexist Boy.” Co-written by Mila and her cousin, it’s the song that first caught the internet’s attention with its powerfully righteous anger about a racist incident Mila experienced in the early days of the pandemic.

The four members of The Linda Lindas – sisters Mila de la Garza and Lucia de la Garza, their cousin Eloise Wong and their family friend Bela Salazar – first played together in 2018, as members of a new-wave cover band put together by Kristin Kontrol of Dum Dum Girls. Soon after that, they formed their own punk group, going on to open for artists like Bikini Kill, Alice Bag, and Best Coast.
